The Great Escape

Reflecting on the past year, projecting the future growth of the company and having a whole lot of fun were the themes for this year’s Star staff retreat. Nicknamed ‘The Great Escape Coromandel 21’ it started 7am Saturday morning at Auckland’s Ardmore airport. Our aircraft waiting were a classic DC3 and a charter plane from Great Barrier Air. Zooming skyward we took a scenic flight over Auckland, down the harbour and headed towards the top of the Coromandel peninsular, flying down its eastern side and landing on the grass runway at Whitianga.

From here it was onto the local hot pools. What better way to get to know your workmates and relax on a Saturday morning than getting in your togs and bathing in the hot waters of some mineral springs. Bliss! Once our skin started to turn wrinkly it was out of the pool and onto the bus for a trip to Seabreeze Holiday Park’s onsite Craft Brewery where beer and pizza were consumed for lunch.

A further short bus ride took us to Pauanui where there was time for a beach walk before heading to Puka Park Resort secluded on the hill amidst 25 acres of New Zealand native bush.

Late afternoon it was time for the CEO presentation from Nick Baker, a chance to review the numbers from the past year and plan where we want Star to be in the years ahead. I won’t share the details, other than to say it’s looking exciting and our team is set to expand!

Saturday night involved an open bar, lovely 3 course meal and a band to entertain us until the late hours. Celebrating success!

Feeling refreshed after breakfast on Sunday morning we checked out of our rooms and headed downtown Pananui for a round of mini-golf and a look at the local markets before most of us fell asleep on the bus back to Auckland.
