With market-leading annual limits for roadside assistance and tow, this membership offers the highest combined level of support available in New Zealand.
*Nearest place of safety = a secure tow yard, mechanical repair premises or a nominated home address (whichever is the closest to the breakdown).
What do I need to get a quote?
- Personal Details
We’ll need a few personal details from you like your driver’s licence, date of birth, address and more. This helps us get a complete picture of your policy application and ensure you’re properly covered.
- Vehicle Details
Tell us about your EV including its registration number so we can pull the right details from the NZTA. We’ll also ask how you use it and how often, to make sure your cover fits perfectly.
- Driving History
We’ll ask you 8 questions as part of the process including whether you’ve had speeding tickets, previous accidents or convictions. Being upfront about your driving history is important because insurance relies on good faith and it can save you headaches later if you ever need to make a claim.
- Next Step - Our Review
At this stage, we’ve got your information and your file is assigned a quote number which is emailed to you right away. We’ll then personally review your application and put together your insurance options. If we receive your application during business hours, you can usually expect your options in your inbox within 30 minutes. Just click the link in the email to view them. From there, simply choose your preferred policy and any add-ons, select your policy start date (from today up to 30 days ahead) then pick monthly or annual payments and make payment. And just like that, you’re insured!
Frequently asked questions
Sometimes you just want a simple answer. Here it is.
-
Not inherently, but premiums are often higher in practice. Insurers calculate premiums based on the vehicle's agreed value, parts availability, and repair costs. Because EVs generally have a higher upfront purchase price and can require specialised repair networks or expensive replacement parts, they can sometimes cost more to insure than equivalent petrol or hybrid models.
-
Yes, under Star Insure’s EV policy, your battery is covered for sudden and accidental physical damage, such as a collision, fire, theft, or flood. However, we do not cover battery degradation, gradual capacity loss, or internal electrical and mechanical failures.
-
No, the structure of the policies is identical. Whether you choose Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft, or Third Party Only, you receive the same core benefits (like glass cover, transport home, or liability protection) as you would for a traditional petrol or diesel vehicle.
-
Portable charging cables: The charging pack and cable that come with your vehicle are generally classed as vehicle accessories. They are covered under our insurance policy if they are stolen or damaged in an insured event.
Home charging stations: Permanently installed wall chargers are not covered by your vehicle insurance. Because they are wired into your property by an electrician, they fall under your Home or Contents insurance.
-
Running out of charge (or suffering a flat tyre) is not covered under a standard insurance claim, just as running out of fuel isn't. However, if you purchase an optional roadside assistance add-on, we will typically tow your EV to the nearest public charging station or a safe location.
