Driving on New Zealand Roads

Plenty of beautiful spots around New Zealand make for a perfect road trip or camping adventure. The summer weather means more cars are on the roads, and holiday traffic increases the dangers of driving.

Staying safe on the road requires some special attention. Here are a few tips:

1. Stay Left: We drive on the left-hand side of the road, which can be confusing for visitors from countries that drive on the right, and sometimes they tend to forget. Always stay alert for drivers who might accidentally be driving into your lane.

2. Watch Your Speed: Speed limits are strictly enforced, with residential areas usually at 50 km/h and open roads usually at 100 km/h. Be cautious, as narrow, winding roads often demand slower speeds.

3. Prepare for Rural Roads: In the countryside, expect one-lane bridges, sharp bends, and occasional gravel roads. Drive cautiously and look out for signs indicating these features.

4. Watch for Wildlife and Livestock: In rural areas, it’s not uncommon to encounter sheep or cattle on the roads. Slow down and pass animals calmly to avoid startling them.

5. Take Breaks: Long drives can be tiring, especially on twisting roads. Plan breaks to rest, enjoy the scenery and prevent driver fatigue. These tips will help ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience in New Zealand.
